Iranian economists warn hardline MPs over policies

A group of 15 prominent Iranian economists issued a public warning to the conservative-dominated parliament yesterday, criticising its handling of economic issues as "destructive" and merely designed to win easy support.

In an open letter carried by the students' news agency Isna, leading university academics hit out at what they said were "superficial measures to control inflation" and warned the MPs to "refrain from acts that have long term destructive effects".

Earlier this month the Iranian parliament, or Majlis, passed a bill that would freeze prices of certain goods and services - such as fuel, water, electricity, communications and postal services - in an effort to control inflation. more
