Arab Activist Arrested in Tehran

Amid ongoing ethnic unrest in southern Iran, where most of the country's Arab population resides, in the capital Tehran, a well-known human rights activist and spokesman for the ethnic Arab minority, Youssef Azizi ben Torof, was arrested on Monday afternoon. "These agents appeared at our house at about two in the afternoon, and after they ransacked the entire apartment, they took away my husband and some boxes filled with documents and manuscripts that they found in his office," said Salimeh Fotuhi, wife of the detained activist in a telephone interview with Adnkronos International (AKI). She added that "the agents said that the arrest warrant was in relation to recent incidents that had taken place in the south of the country."

In the past few days, while clashes with the authorities have resulted in a number of deaths - opposition sources say 70 people have been killed. ...
