More than 500 people attacked two government buildings and set fire to tyres in the streets of the town of Basamanj, northwest Iran, in protest to constant water and electricity disruptions, the state-owned daily Kayhan reported on Wednesday.

Residents gathered outside the town hall and the local offices of the water and sewage department on Monday and chanted anti-government slogans. Soon after, the angry protestors attacked both buildings, throwing sticks and rocks and smashing their windows.

State Security Forces were brought in to disperse the crowd.

The situation got worse after the governor of Tabriz did not show up for a meeting he had promised the protestors. Angry demonstrators started a riot and set alight tyres in the streets.
