India briefs Iran on reasons for supporting resolution

India on Tuesday briefed Iran on the reasons for supporting the IAEA resolution on Tehran's controversial nuclear programme and made it clear that it had no reservation on peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

During a meeting Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran had with Iranian Ambassador S Z Yaghoubi, it was explained that New Delhi's vote for the resolution was aimed at averting a major confrontation between Iran and the international community. READ MORE

The Iranian envoy expressed disappointment over the resolution saying that it was "not logical."

It was political in nature and approved because of "some pressure," an Iranian embassy spokesman quoted Yaghoubi as having told Saran.
