Bush: Nuclear-Armed Iran Poses Danger to World

President Bush says the entire world would be in danger if Iran manages to build or possess nuclear weapons. In a joint news conference Saturday in Islamabad with his Pakistani counterpart, Pervez Musharraf, Mr. Bush repeated his concerns regarding Tehran's nuclear ambitions. The U.S. president's comments come one day after talks between European and Iranian negotiators failed to resolve an international standoff concerning the Islamic republic's nuclear program. The United States and the Europeans want the International Atomic Energy Agency, which meets Monday in Vienna, to refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions.

Washington accuses Tehran of secret efforts to develop an atomic weapon. Tehran, which resumed enriching uranium earlier this year despite Western protests, says its nuclear program is for generating electricity.

European negotiators called Friday's talks constructive, but said the Iranians did not show up ready to meet European demands it stop all uranium enrichment activities.

Iranian and Russian officials have been discussing a Russian proposal that would have Iranian nuclear fuel enriched on Russian soil. That proposal is designed to ease concerns that Iran could use enriched fuel to build a nuclear weapon. Iran says those talks will end if it is referred to the Security Council.
