Triangulating the War

Victor Davis Hanson highlights the folly of this generations fixation on instant success. He provides needed perspective.
Reading the pages of foreign-policy journals, between the long tracts on Bush's "failures" and neoconservative "arrogance," one encounters mostly predictions of defeat and calls for phased withdrawal — always with resounding criticism of the American "botched" occupation.

Platitudes follow: "We can't just leave now," followed by no real advice on how a fascist society can be jumpstarted into a modern liberal republic. After all, there is no government handbook entitled, "Operation 1A: How to remove a Middle East fascist regime in three weeks, reconstruct the countryside, and hold the first elections in the nation's history — all within two years." Almost all who supported the war now are bailing on the pretext that their version of the reconstruction was not followed: While a three-week war was their idea, a 20-month messy reconstruction was surely someone else's. Yesterday genius is today's fool — and who knows next month if the elections work? Witness Afghanistan where all those who recently said the victory was "lost" to warlords are now suddenly quiet. more

Iran's Rafsanjani tells Muslims to 'kick' Americans out of region

Iran's influential former president, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani:
"The Muslims should take advantage of the political openness and kick the Americans out of the region," Rafsanjani said in a sermon broadcast on state radio.

"The United States cannot mislead people any more and claim that they want to bring about freedom and the democracy... the shame of Abu Gharib and Guantanamo still trails the US and it cannot claim to speak about human rights," said Rafsanjani, now the head Iran's arbitration body. more

Iran and Osama: Match Made In Hell

Ryan Mauro writes:
While the world remains fixated on the situation in Iraq, the Bush Administration seems equally concerned with Iran. As the world’s most intense (in quantity and quality) sponsor of international terrorism, and a rogue state in search of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, the specter of an alliance between Al-Qaeda terrorists and the fundamentalist Iran is indeed a scary one. Accusations by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and President Bush show that this is indeed the case. This article will examine if the evidence has been stretched or even falsified. more

Honoring Democracy

Recently President Bush gave us a glimpse into the direction of his foreign policy for the next four years. He said:
"If you want a glimpse of how I think about foreign policy read Natan Sharansky's book, The Case for Democracy. . . . For government, particularly--for opinion makers, I would put it on your recommended reading list. It's short and it's good. This guy is a heroic figure, as you know. It's a great book." more

Soros supports mullahs: The left embraces yet another enemy

Dr. Jerome Corsi writing for the WorldNetDaily reveals:
the pro-mullah American-Iranian Council joined forces with George Soros's Open Society Institute to host Javad Zarif, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, to give a talk titled, "The View from Tehran." ...

The key story here was not that the mullahs and their cohorts in America were dissembling – that was old news. What this event signaled was that George Soros and the American far left were ready to spend millions more supporting America's enemies, including radical Islamic extremists from a terror-supporting rogue state like Iran. more

Defeating the Woman-Haters

FrontPageMag reports:
The clerics’ version of sharia law imposes a crushing system of gender apartheid on Iranians based on the premise that women are physically, psychologically, intellectually, and morally inferior to men. Men are legally granted all decision-making power within the family, including control of the movement and employment of women and the custody of children. A public dress code or hejab is mandatory and violations result in reprimands, arrests, whippings, imprisonment, and even summary executions have been documented. All public activities are segregated, and women are banned from attending sporting events in which men’s legs are uncovered. Women are banned from associating with men who are not their relatives. The age of marriage was lowered to nine years of age for girls. Polygamy was legalized. And stoning to death became a legal form of punishment for sexual misconduct.

The clerics made laws on how to control, punish, torture, and kill women and girls. Misogyny and violence against women were institutionalized. more

Iranian Bloggers frustration with Internet filtering

Iranian bloggers are often intelligent and articulate and increasingly frustrated with their regimes efforts to block their access to western thought. For instance, one blogger, Brooding Persian. In an interest post he laments:
How would I keep track of what mischief Mr. Ledeen is up to if the authorities here insisted on filtering sites so comprehensively? Is it too late to ask Santa to deliver Ledeen's writings via email? ...

The only serious thinker in the lot consistently making me think is Mr. Hanson. And I know where to find his writings. Although I must admit, I was a bit concerned after reading his latest piece. Geopolitical wars come and go. But that other more important, perpetual war on imbecility might suffer if Mr. Hanson continues being a Disenchanted American. more

European Parliament resolution censures Iran rights violations

The European Parliament adopted a resolution by majority vote today condemning human rights violations in Iran in the second such move over the past six months.

The toughly-worded resolution denounced practices such as execution of juveniles and stoning carried out by the Iranian regime.

Parts of the resolution read, "the European Parliament … strongly condemns death sentences against and/or the execution of juvenile offenders, pregnant women and mentally handicapped persons”.

The EP resolution also expressed deep concern over "the worsening situation with regard to freedom of opinion and expression and freedom of the media, especially the increased persecution for the peaceful expression of political views, including arbitrary arrests and detention without charge or trial".

The European Parliament censured “the campaign by the Judiciary against journalists, cyber journalists and webloggers leading to the closure of publications, imprisonment and according to reports widespread torture and forced false confessions.” more

Iran Revolutionary Guards Commander: US presence a threat

Iran Focus reports:
In an apparent reference to the presence of US troops in Iraq, a senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard's Corps (IRGC) official called for Iran to mobilize its troops against the "dangerous Zionist threat".

Speaking to Revolutionary Guards and Iran's Bassij (paramilitary police) forces in Khuzestan on Tuesday Deputy IRGC Commander Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr said, "The Islamic Republic will not tolerate American presence in the region".

Bush and Bolton

In an editorial in the NY Sun:
If personnel is policy, one man to watch as Mr. Bush forms his second term administration is John Bolton, the undersecretary of state for arms control. As the most prominent Bush loyalist and conservative voice at Foggy Bottom, his fate in the current reshuffle of senior administration posts will be tracked most keenly by friend and foe alike. ...

If he is fired or, at best, shifted sideways, it will be taken as a signal in Tehran and elsewhere that it's business as usual. They will conclude that the pseudopragmatists of the American foreign-policy establishment are in the ascendant and that the so-called true believers in the "Bush revolution" have had their day. The prosecution of a woman who cared for cats!

The Islamic regime's judiciary, in an exceedingly inhumane and appalling attempt which is indicative of unprecedented extents of intrusion in the private lives of the Iranian people, has prosecuted a Tehrani woman whom they have charged with caring for cats! The helpless woman has been charged with keeping six cats in her one bedroom apartment; the judge interogated her for the "comings and goings" of the cats and later in the context of the prosecution, ferociously questioned the woman's elderly father as well.

This case was tried in the second circuit court of Tehran's district 19; the proceedings were broadcast on the Islamic regime's television in order to make an example of this innocent woman and further intimidate the people of Iran.

In the end of this prosecution, the medieval Islamic regime's inquisitor indicted the woman for mental illness and ordered her to be institutionalized in an asylum. The Razi mental asylum is reputed to be extraordinarily unsanitary and it is a know fact that indeed mentally stable people are committed, as punishment to this facility in order to mentally destabilize them! more

Iranian Leader Khamenei: Iran's Enemies Want to Destroy it with Miniskirts

Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei said:
More than Iran's enemies need artillery, guns and so forth, they need to spread cultural values that lead to moral corruption. They have said this many times. I recently read in the news that one of them, a seniorofficial in an important American political center, said: "Instead of bombs, send them miniskirts." He is right. If they arouse sexual desires in any given country, if they spread unrestrained mixing of men and women, and if they lead youth to behavior to which they are naturally inclined by instincts, there will no longer be any need for artillery and guns against that nation.

A message regarding a call for a National referendum - Reza Pahlavi

The following is an important statement by the son of the former Shah of Iran regarding the current effort inside of Iran to hold an referendum on the Iranian constitution.
The recent student movement supported by groups of human rights and political activists petitioning support for the conduct of a national referendum, has been supported by a wide spectrum of organizations, political parties and personalities whose unity of direction seemed unlikely prior to the failure of regime’s vow to reform itself. ...

However, it is evident that the current regime's nature and rule prevent the realization of the necessary preconditions for holding a referendum, which is acceptable only when all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience are freed, freedom of press is guaranteed and all groups, political parties and proponents of all ideologies have the right to organize, freely engage in political activity, and enjoy freedom of speech and equitable access to the media.

Mobilizing the public and organizing resistance in all directions, in order to force the regime to yield to the nation’s demands and the creation of the aforementioned conditions comes with great risks and dangers. Calls for violence and unrealistic slogans are but a few of such dangers that will only lead to further violence by the regime. Similarly, insisting on a particular form or structure for the future political order will only breed disunity and benefit the ruling regime. more
