Hundreds arrested in Iran capital during festival – police

Some 400 people were arrested in the Iranian capital on various charges on Sunday which marked the 13th and final day of the Persian New Year, greater Tehran’s Police Chief announced on Monday.

“Also, during that day 130 vehicles and motorbikes were confiscated”, Brigadier General Reza Zarei told the state-run news agency ISNA.

The Persian New Year which dates back to more than a thousand years coincides with the arrival of Spring. The new year celebrations end on the thirteenth day as families go for picnic lunches in parks.

In Tehran’s Mellat Park, a gathering was held amid heavy police presence in support of political prisoners on death row.
