Iran's Journalists Association protests temporary closure of newspaper

Iran's Journalists Association in a statement issued here Saturday protest against temporary closure of Eqbal newspaper. The statement, a copy of which was faxed to IRNA, said, "Unfortunately, on the eve of presidential election last week, a group of our colleagues lost their jobs, because of temporary closure of the paper." Eqbal newspaper was closed last Monday upon a court order.

The statement said the trend which has been followed in recent years under title of "temporary closure" does not have any legal basis and contrary to Article 168 of the Constitution.

It said, "as we mentioned before in other statements, the lack of professional independence and job security for journalists would damage the ruling system."
