English text of the Call for Solidarity with the imprisoned Iranian philosopher and writer Ramin Jahanbegloo:

We have just learned that Ramin Jahanbegloo, the renowned Iranian writer and philosopher, has been arrested. Charged with “spying” and “attempt against national security”, Jahanbegloo has been arrested upon arrival at Tehran airport. Returning from India, he had been working on the completion of his latest book, Talking India, due to be released next August by the Oxford University Press. A Doctorate from La Sorbonne, he has studied and taught for years in northern America, at Harvard and at the University of Toronto. Author of multiple studies on tradition and modernity in Iran, Jahanbegloo has been transferred to the notorious Evin prison, north of the capital. His case is the latest among an ongoing series of arbitrary arrests hitting journalists, bloggers, and other prisoners of conscience, charged based on political and religious motives regardless of the most basic principles of justice and the presumption of innocence. Deeply concerned, we call upon the European Union and all competent international institutions to increase their pressure on the Islamic authorities in Tehran, asking for the immediate release of Jahanbegloo and other political prisoners.
