China urges Iran to return to nuclear talks

China's top envoy in charge of nonproliferation issues has urged Iran to accept an incentives package offered by China and five other countries in exchange for suspending uranium enrichment, state media said Wednesday.

Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai told his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani in Teheran on Tuesday that China "hopes that Iran will seize the opportunity to respond to the package in a positive way," the official Xinhua News Agency said. READ MORE

In June, five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain - as well as Germany offered the incentives in exchange for a pledge that Teheran would suspend uranium enrichment.

Iran has said it will respond to the offer by Aug. 22. It could face sanctions if it refuses the offer.
